Foundation Ukrainians in the Netherlands organized the screening of the film Haytarma with the director and main actor Akhtem Seitablaiev, Brand New Ukraine was responsible for the online & offline promotion of the film. The result, almost 200 guests at the premiere in The Hague.
THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF GENOCIDE AGAINST CRIMEAN TARTARS: PREMIERE SCREENING OF “HAYTARMA” [Return], AS MARK OF RESPECT TO THE 71st ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEPORATION OF CRIMEAN TARTARS.
The premiere screening in the Netherlands is a unique opportunity to enjoy a cinematic masterpiece that received numerous awards and caused an international scandal when the General Consulate of Russia did not allow Soviet pilots to attend the premiere in Ukraine in 2013. At our event, after the screening you will also have an opportunity to meet the film director and lead actor Akhtem Seitablaiev while enjoying delicious dishes from the traditional Crimean Tartar and Ukrainian cuisine.
Based on documented evidence, the film depicts one of the most tragic chapters in the history of Crimea – the deportation of Crimean Tatars on May 18, 1944. The stories about that terrible day have been passed from generation to generation. It is well-known that during all critical times children, women, and the elderly carry the heaviest burden. “Haytarma” is one of the first movies produced by a former Soviet Union state which depicts Stalin’s crimes against various ethnic groups. The film reproduces the story of those defensless people, who one early morning were loaded into cattle cars and transported without any reason or explanation from Crimea to Russia’s Ural region and Uzbekistan. Almost half of them died on the road or in the first years of exile from malnutrition, disease, and maltreatment.
Historians confirm that the film captures the spirit of that era and accurately portrays those tragic events. Although the film is not an easy watch, the viewer will get a real aesthetic pleasure. The beauty of Crimea paints the beautiful scenery for the film that is full of military battles and compelling personal stories. “Haytarma” received wide domestic and international acclaim and was chosen as the best Ukrainian film for 2013.
The film’s primary purpose is to teach, to memorialize, and to be a warning not to repeat the past.
